Dagmar Burkhart, born near Munich/Germany, studied Russian literature at the University of Heidelberg and continued to study Slavic Philology, Balkanistics, Americanistics and European Cultural Anthropology at the University of Munich. She earned her Ph.D. degree from the University of Munich. In the following years she acquired the qualifikation "Lecturer for German as foreign language" and worked as lecturer at the Goethe Institute. She was Assistant Professor of Balkanistics at the Free University of West Berlin, where she earned her Venia legendi for Balkanistics (1983) and Slavonic Literatures (1985). From 1985 to 1995 she was Professor of South Slavic, Russian and Polish Literatures at the University of Hamburg, 1995-2002 Full Professor of Slavic Literatures and Chair of the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Mannheim. 2002 she retired and does free research work since then.
She is member of the Academia Europaea.

Ausbildung am Dolmetscher-Institut der Universtät Heidelberg, Studium der Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften mit Promotion an der Universität München, Übersetzungstätigkeit für Verlage und das Filmmuseum in München, Dozentin im Bereich Erwachsenenbildung, Redakteurin bei Kindlers Literatur-Lexikon, Habilitation an der Freien Universität Berlin, bis 1995 Professorin für Slawistik an der Universität Hamburg (Spezialgebiete: russische Literatur, polnische Literatur, südslawische Literaturen und Folklore), 1995 bis 2002 Professorin und Geschäftsführende Direktorin des Instituts für Slawistik an der Universität Mannheim. Seit 2002 freie Forschungstätigkeit auf dem Gebiet der interkulturellen Literaturwissenschaft und Literaturtheorie, der Semiotik und der Kulturanthropologie. 2016 zum Mitglied der Academia Europaea gewählt.
